CHAPTER 8 · 1895~1907

Scene 1
Scholars Take Up Arms
In late 1895, two shocking events struck Korea within months of each other: the queen's assassination, and a royal order forcing all men to cut their traditional topknots short. To many Confucian scholars, this felt like an attack on their very identity. Groups of scholars and local villagers, who had never held a weapon before, began forming small armed bands called "righteous armies" to resist.

A Treaty Sparks a Second Wave
Ten years later, in 1905, Japan forced Korea to sign a treaty that took away the country's control over its own foreign affairs. Anger exploded across the country again. This time, the righteous armies were not only scholars — ordinary commoners joined too, including some, like the fighter Sin Dol-seok, who became famous for leading bands entirely on their own, without noble rank.

Trained Soldiers Join the Fight
The biggest turning point came in August 1907. After the king was forced off the throne, Japan disbanded the entire Korean army. Soldiers who had spent years training with real rifles suddenly found themselves without a country to serve — so many of them marched straight into the mountains and joined the righteous armies. For the first time, the resistance had real military skill behind it.

Thirteen Provinces, One Army
By late 1907, righteous army units from across the country decided to join forces. Leaders from thirteen different provinces gathered their fighters into a single combined force, sometimes called the "Righteous Army of the Thirteen Provinces." Their bold plan: march together on Seoul and try to take the capital back.

Scene 5
The March on Seoul
In early 1908, thousands of righteous army fighters advanced toward Seoul from several directions. But Japan's forces, which had modern weapons and far better coordination, blocked them before they could reach the city. The advance guard, who had pushed ahead of the main force, was defeated in a fierce battle near the capital. The grand plan collapsed.

Scene 6
Seeds Scattered Across the Border
Even after the failed march, righteous army fighters kept resisting from the mountains for years, in smaller and smaller groups. Eventually, facing overwhelming force, many crossed the northern border into Manchuria and Russia. There, far from home, these fighters who had refused to give up quietly became the seed of a new generation of independence armies — a story that Korea's next chapters would carry forward.

"Groups of scholars and local villagers, who had never held a weapon before, began forming small armed bands."
"These fighters who had refused to give up quietly became the seed of a new generation of independence armies."
"who had never held a weapon before"는 바로 앞의 "scholars and local villagers"가 어떤 사람들이었는지 설명해 주고 있어요.
