Ten Thousand Voices Shouting "Manse!"

Scene 1
A Nation Ready to Speak
In January 1919, former Emperor Gojong suddenly died, and rumors spread that the Japanese had poisoned him. Around the same time, Korean students in Tokyo declared that Korea deserved independence, inspired by a new idea spreading across the world after World War One: every nation has the right to rule itself.

Thirty-Three Names, One Plan
Thirty-three Korean leaders, from different religions and backgrounds, secretly worked together to write a Declaration of Independence. They agreed on one important rule: their protest had to stay peaceful, with no violence, so that Korea could show the world it deserved to be treated fairly.

March 1, 1919
On March 1, the thirty-three leaders read their declaration in a restaurant and quietly reported themselves to the police. At almost the same moment, students and citizens gathered at Tapgol Park in Seoul, read the same declaration aloud, and marched through the streets, shouting "Manse!" — meaning "long live Korea!"

A Cry Heard Across the Country
The shout of "Manse!" was so powerful that it spread far beyond Seoul. Over the following weeks, millions of Koreans in villages and towns all across the country joined in, holding their own peaceful marches. It became one of the largest protests Korea had ever seen.

A Harsh Response, and a New Government
Japanese police and soldiers responded to the peaceful marches with great force, and many people were hurt or killed. But the movement also had a lasting result: in April 1919, Korean independence leaders gathered in Shanghai, China, and formed a new Provisional Government of Korea.

A Day Koreans Still Remember
The 3.1 Movement did not win independence right away, and Japan continued to rule Korea for over two decades more. Still, it proved that ordinary Koreans — students, farmers, shopkeepers — could stand together for one goal. Today, March 1 is still celebrated in Korea every single year.
